How you take the payment changes the fee more than anything else. On a $100.00 sale with the Free plan, an invoice paid by ACH bank transfer costs the least at $1.00 and Afterpay the most at $6.30.

Square takes its fee from everything the customer pays, not just the price of what you sold. On a $100.00 in-person sale with 8% sales tax the customer pays $108.00 and the fee is $2.96. Enter the tax rate and shipping above, and add any tip to the sale amount, to see the exact fee.

How much does Square take from a $100 sale?
On the Free plan, $2.75 in person, $3.60 online or on a card-paid invoice, and $3.65 if you type the card in. You receive $97.25 from an in-person sale.
Does Square charge fees on tips and sales tax?
Yes. Square takes its fee from the total of each payment, including tax and tip. A $100 in-person sale with 8% sales tax pays $2.96 instead of $2.75. Add tips to the sale amount above to include them.
Why does Square charge more for keyed-in payments?
Typing a card number in, or charging a card on file, costs 3.5% + $0.15 on every plan, compared with 2.6% + $0.15 when the card is tapped, dipped or swiped. If the customer is in front of you, take the card in person.
Is Square Plus worth it for the lower fees?
Plus saves $10.00 on every $10,000 of in-person sales and $40.00 on every $10,000 of online sales, compared with Free. Weigh that against the monthly price of the plan.
Does Square charge chargeback fees?
No. Square does not charge a fee for chargebacks or for managing disputes.
